Laney Lebo Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36
Music has another visitor!
Laney Lebo is a wonderful singer who recently released her debut single "Helium". I was so glad she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, future goals, and more. I’m sure you’ll enjoy everything she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Laney Lebo visits Section 36 Music!

I loved your recent debut single “Helium”. What can you tell me about it?

I wrote Helium for a class probably around this time last year for a class. The assignment involved really digging deep into your music history/roots and pulling out musical elements that define them. I’ll get into more specific examples later, but I’ve always been inspired by singer-songwriters with an emphasis on lyrics, vocal harmonies, and ambiance. The resulting song was my favorite I had ever written at the time, the first one where I felt very confident in my choices. I love the melody, harmonies, and especially the central metaphor and meaning of the song. I felt it was one of the first I wrote that really defined and expressed real emotions/experiences I’ve had personally.

What was your favorite part about the recording process?

Recording the harmonies! That’s always my favorite part of the process. Building the tracks up part by part is so satisfying to me, especially when it comes together for the final product.

You are currently attending Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest thing Berklee is doing for your career?

Attending Berklee has allowed me time to figure out exactly where I want to be in the future. Before coming to Berklee, I didn’t believe that I was a well rounded “musician” to branch out into anything other than performance, so having time to take different classes and slowly build my skill set in terms of writing/arranging/producing has been incredibly valuable for me. I needed guidance and time to learn how to be an artist, as well as who I am as an artist.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

My main influences (and the ones I referenced when writing Helium) are Sufjan Stevens, Hozier, Ed Sheeran, and Fiona Apple. Ed Sheeran’s first album, a super stripped, lyric/storytelling-focused collection of songs, was my first musical love. The song “Wake Me Up” blew my mind with lyrics that went on forever, depicting such clear and personal moments, accompanied by an incredibly scarce piano part. This is the first instance I remember appreciating simple songwriting, as well as the idea of hiding intricacies and creating a specific ambiance. I could go on forever about the other three, each of which have their own specific element that makes me love them so much (Sufjan’s melancholy lyrics and tone, Fiona’s vocabulary and moody chord choices, Hozier’s joyous and complicated arrangements).

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

Getting stuff done. I am really bad with writing on my own time and work much better with deadlines, so I’ll definitely need to find an alternate writing process once I’m not in school and no one is expecting work from me:)

What are your immediate career goals?

My goal right now is to write more music that I love and build my rep. My first goal when coming to Berklee was to make money making music in any way possible. I’ve accomplished this since I joined the gig band scene and played few paid gigs of my own this summer. Helium coming out also feels like a great base-level achievement. The next goal is to make money playing MY music. :)

Let's see if we can help Laney reach those goals!

As always, I want to thank Laney for visiting, and for sending along the pictures to accompany the interview.

I'm sure you’ll all want to follow along with her to see what she's up to. I would definitely follow her on Instagram, and/or Spotify. In fact, go do both right now!

Thanks again Laney, and good luck reaching your goals!

Wendy Wang Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36
Music has another visitor!
Wendy Wang is a fantastic singer with a wonderful debut single "Over Again". I was so glad she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, future goals, and more. I’m sure you’ll enjoy everything she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Wendy Wang visits Section 36 Music!

I loved your recent debut single “Over Again”. What can you tell me about it?

This song is about being in a relationship and feeling like the other person isn't putting as much effort into it. It's about feeling disappointed and down because the other person keeps wanting to give up, when you are trying your best to make it work.

What was your favorite part about the recording process?

This song was actually a project I worked on for a school submission. My producer Naman reached out to me with the track and I toplined it. I've never done a song like this before and it was very different from my usual style, but I enjoyed the writing process a lot. We loved what we came up with so much that we wanted to release it, so Naman reached out to lama who did an excellent job on elevating this song to another level.

You had the opportunity to attend Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest thing Berklee is doing for your career?

The biggest thing Berklee has given me is actually my friends and the amount of talented musicians I get to work with and meet. Having the network connections and collaborating with one another is definitely what I love about going here.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

My current biggest musical influences are definitely NIKI and Billie Eilish. I've always loved these two artists, especially the emotions behind their songs.

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

I'm actually a very introverted and shy person, I'm only ever talkative around my friends. I don't tend to put myself out there as much as other people so I would say I have definitely missed out on opportunities because of that.

What are your immediate career goals?

My immediate career goals are performing more and putting out an EP. I'm currently working on a few songs that I hope to release later this year and I'm very excited about it!!

---

I'm excited for those songs as well!

“Chance of Whiskey" by Sabrina Ponte (October 7, 2022 Release)

"Chance of Whiskey" is the latest single from Nashville based sensation Sabrina Ponte!

I have been a huge fan of Sabrina's for years, and always look forward to a new release. This song definitely did not disappoint. What can you expect from the song? Well, here's what the press release say about it...

"[Chance of Whiskey] has the romance, the lust, and the longing - all things that might just involve a little whiskey. Through her soft vocals, Sabrina describes the moment of a past love interest walking through the doors of the bar. We can picture the scene, her friends drinking around the bar, and when she least expects it a past love comes in and we are introduced to the possible of rekindling an old flame."

If that wasn't enough to get you excited, Sabrina was nice enough to answer a couple questions for us about the release. Here's what she had to say...

I was so excited to hear that you were releasing “Chance of Whiskey”. What can you tell me about it?

Thank you! I had so much fun writing it with Jake Lindholm and Andreas Eriksson. It was produced by Dallas Jack.

There are so many answers we don’t have, especially when we are young. There’s always a chance of something you might not be able to control or guarantee. I really wanted to write around the concept of “chance of whiskey” and that’s exactly what my two co writes and I did. “Chance of Whiskey” is a fun song about there being chances of a lot of different things happening in your night and although you don’t know the outcome, what you do know now is there’s a strong chance of whiskey.

I am a huge fan of your previous music, including "U-Turn" and "Black Roses". How would you say "Black Whiskey" compares to your previous work?
I think this is a song a lot of people can relate to and the feeling of just needing a strong one. Hopefully it can be a reminder not to stress too much because life’s going to happen; so to try to live in the moment and have fun when you can. "Chance of Whiskey" is more similar I would say to "U-turn" in that it is more upbeat with a country feel, "Black Roses" was more of a ballad. I am so excited for everyone to be able to listen.
---

I can't say enough good things about this song. Sabrina accomplishes everything she talks about. Her vocals are always something to marvel at, and she did it again with this release. Anything I say will be unable to properly capture the wonderfulness of this song. You just need to go hear it for yourself. Prepare to be amazed.

Aarya Ganesan Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36
Music has another visitor!
Aarya Ganesan is a fantastic singer who recently released her single "Forever Ain't Enough". I was so glad she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, future goals, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Aarya Ganesan visits Section 36 Music!

I loved your recent single “Forever Ain’t Enough”. What can you tell me about it?

Ah thank you so much! This one was definitely a song that got me stepping out of my comfort zone. I’m usually the type of person who always goes for an acoustic sound by default but in the last couple of years, I got completely sucked into the world of production and loved every bit of it and that’s what inspired the sound of this song. I got to co-produce it with the Ryan Kay and the BGVs were arranged by Priya Mani - two fantastic musicians who are also fellow Berklee grads! I think this phase of my life has been confusing yet exciting to navigate whether it be career, life, love - all of it and that’s been the central theme of all my music; regardless, I am a permanent emo music girl and this single is probably as “happy” as a song will get haha!

With live shows happening again, what’s your favorite part about performing in front of an audience?

The best part is the audience themselves. There is something so special about the idea of so many people taking a couple of hours out of their day to just watch you, support you and listen to you. Performing live is always the biggest reminder for me that there is absolutely nothing else I’d rather be doing than this. Being an artist is challenging both professionally and personally, but the moment you stand to perform in front of people who are rooting for you and want nothing but the best for you is life-changing. It has had the most positive impact on my music and life. I am so grateful for all the shows I got to do and every single person that showed up.

You recently graduated from Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest thing Berklee did for your career?

The Berklee experience is really one of a kind and I think for me, it really came down to the knowledge. You learn something every single day; the best part about Berklee was that there was not a single day that was exactly the same. The beauty of the experience was waking up everyday knowing you’re going to come back home learning something you didn’t know before. Every interaction, every collaboration and conversation is a source of so much knowledge. I have learnt so much not just from my professors, but my peers, my seniors, my juniors, visiting artists, and staff. Berklee gave me the tools to be a well-rounded musician. I was a film scoring major, but I graduated with the ability to wear different hats based on what is required on the job whether it be a film composer, editor, singer, performer, arranger. Despite being in a more writing-focused major, I was able to do numerous shows at my time there and that is something I hope to carry through my career path as well.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

Ooh this one changes probably every single day based on the music I feel like writing. I think Indian music will always hold a very special place in my heart. I grew up listening to AR Rahman and Shankar Mahadevan - their music is very much my go-to when I am looking for inspiration. Lately, I’ve gotten into Indian RnB as both a listener and songwriter so I’ve been listening to artists like Maharani, Raveena, and Pritt. They are three amazing women who’ve embraced their culture and created a new sound that is just absolutely beautiful.

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

I think right now since I’ve just graduated, it’s a little daunting. The career anxiety is a tad higher because when you’re just starting out, you want to do everything, and when you want to do everything it’s hard to know where to even start. Also being a producer, entering a male-dominated industry as a woman of color comes with its own set of challenges but I see it as my biggest strength because every person’s identity is what makes their sound the most unique and most impactful. From a more music-specific standpoint, having to be creative and inspired all the time is tough because every job is running on a deadline. Having to keep things fresh and new with every project can get exhausting. It is a very demanding industry but I do believe that knowing you get to do what you love everyday is enough to get past the hurdle.

What are your immediate career goals?

Right now, I am looking to go into film as a composer. I’m keeping my options open between working in the States or India which is home for me. I am currently working with a composer in India on a film. I am also working on my own music as an independent artist and am hoping to release an EP in the next few months. I am collaborating with many artists at Berklee to bring this album to fruition! I am also hoping to continue performing and doing shows!

---

I can't wait for that EP!

As always, I want to thank Aarya for visiting, and for sending along the pictures to accompany the interview.
