“Benefits" by Melissa Mills (Sep 24, 2021 Release)

Benefits" is the latest single from the amazing singer Melissa Mills!

And you won’t want to miss it!

I’m sure you remember Melissa from her interview with us, where we discussed her single “Blueberry Daydream". Or, like I am, you’re a fan of her wonderful single “Lose My Cool” or “The Waves”. I could not wait for this release, and was not disappointed! I know you'll love it as much as I do.

What can you expect from the song? Here’s what Melissa had to say about it…

Benefits explores the tempting world of turning a friend into something more. Not knowing exactly how the other feels but knowing just what you want. But benefits aren’t always a good idea, it can ruin a friendship. And it has ruined many in my past. So have I learned my lesson? I have plenty of history to back up that friends with benefits is tough to navigate, but only time will tell if I make the right choices. In the meantime I’ll keep day dreaming.

Benefits features Joey Eldracher absolutely killing it on guitar. The ending of this song is completely unstructured, so we had fun improvising and trying to work around each other. It gives a “playing live”energy that is exciting and enticing. And you’ll find that fluidity that’s found in all of my music. Check out Benefits today on all streaming platforms!

You can find “Benefits" just about everywhere you usually find your music, like Spotify, and Apple! So, there's no reason why you won't be able track it down…which I highly suggest you do.

And you won’t want to miss it!

You probably remember Briana from her interview with us, where we discussed her single “Ancestral Sin". She has quite a collection of wonderful songs under her belt, and "Make It Count" adds another one to her impressive resume. What do you need to know about the song? Here's what Briana had to say in the release...

At the beginning of the pandemic, [Briana] came back to Amesbury to be close to family, and while she was here wrote a new song called “Make It Count” with co-writer Dennis P. Coronel. “I didn't write it with politics in mind,” says Cash, “but with all that was going on in the world I think now the song has found a purpose for how important it is today to make your voice heard and your vote count.

“Justice” by Melissa D (Sep 24, 2021 release)

“Justice" is the latest single from the fantastic singer Melissa D!

You'll definitely want to check it out, ASAP!

What can you expect from this song? Here's what the release had to say...

"Justice" embraces [Melissa D's] country roots while also pulling from a vintage 60’s vibe adding a different flavor to the production creating an Americana-Woodstock fusion. The single addresses social justice issues and is reminiscent of a folk protest song.

Melissa states that the song was inspired after a “very tough and disheartening 2020 that was a big yellow highlighter for social justice issues that need to be addressed.” She adds, “Writing this song was a way to vent my anger and frustration, releasing these feelings allows me to take what is upsetting me about the world and turn it upside down and ask, ‘What would I rather see on this planet?’ and then become a love activist for that instead.”

This song is simply incredible. You can definitely feel the folk protest energy when you listen to it. I couldn't stop listening to it, and loved every replay. I'm sure you will too! Be sure to listen to it for yourself.

You can find “Justice" just about everywhere you usually get your music like Apple and Spotify. So, there's no reason you won't be able to find it.…which I highly suggest you do.

And do quickly.

Lady Jessica Music Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Jessica, of Lady Jessica, is a talented singer, getting ready to release her debut album. I was thrilled she wanted to visit with us and discuss her music, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Jessica visits Section 36 Music!

I’m really looking forward to your debut album. Can you tell me about it?

Of course! My debut album is a ten-song collection of RnB/Rock inspired work, orchestrated with lush and diverse musical textures. It mixes a variety of genres, but all songs have a groove of their own. After choosing which songs to debut, I found this album has a theme of self-reflection, and I think that is so cool.

You’re currently attending Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest way that’s benefitting your career?

Oh, wow. Well, attending Berklee has not only helped develop and expand my musical abilities/interests, but has also helped me find my truest self as an artist and person. This has happened through the teachings and wisdom of my incredible instructors and beloved mentor. I have met so many like-minded people here, and now have achievable goals that I before thought were only dreams. Maybe a bit sappy, but true.

As the world returns to live shows, what is your favorite thing about performing in front of an audience?

The energy! I think a lot of musicians would say that. There is an absolute correlation between my enjoyment of performing and the presence of an audience. Nothing compares! It is a mutual exchange of fun that is only possible in a live setting.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

I am very influenced by genres. Classic Rock was my first obsession, then came the Blues, 90’s Rock/Alternative, Reggae, and Funk. All of these are present in my music, but I would say that my voice is most influenced by women of Blues music – Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton, and Janis Joplin for example. Because I grew up on early 2000’s RnB and Pop, there is a definite influence of that as well, and my  phase with Musical Theater has also seeped in, adding a dramatic and thematic quality to some of my music and ideas.

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

At this time, being predominantly self-taught (before attending music school) has been a definite challenge, but one that I am happily overcoming. Music literacy is incredibly important for many reasons, therefore a career challenge I happily accept. Beyond that, my relationship with social media is challenging. I have never really been a "poster," so it does not come natural to me. I aim to overcome this in order to make my art easily accessible.

What are your immediate career goals?

An unshakable career goal of mine is finishing the last year of

my undergraduate musical training with as much fulfillment as possible. This next year is really important. And besides performing live again, the production of my debut album is a very important immediate goal. And, of course, I want as many people to listen to it as possible!

---

I can't wait to listen to that album!

As always, I want to thank Jessica for visiting, and for sending along the pictures to accompany the interview.

I know you’ll all want to follow along with Jessica to see what she's up to. The best way is to visit her Instagram and her website. They're great ways to keep track of everything she has going on.

Lily Rhodes Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Lily Rhodes is an amazing singer, fresh off the release of her latest single "Calling to Say. I was thrilled she wanted to visit with us and discuss her music, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Lily Rhodes visits Section 36 Music!

I really enjoyed your recent single “Calling to Say”. What can you tell me about it?
My newest single, ‘Calling To Say’ is inspired by a voicemail I had planned and scripted for my ex-boyfriend. Although our relationship ended in heartbreak, writing and producing ‘Calling To Say’ allowed me to reminisce about our past and wish my ex-boyfriend and his family the best. My friend and fellow musician Evan Cieplik helped contributed bass, guitar, and drums to the song to compliment my emotional lyrics, soulful vocals, and lo-fi production style.

You’re currently attending Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest way that’s benefitting your career?
Attending Berklee College of Music has taught me many things about music theory, rhythm, musicianship, and more. My songwriting ability has developed a lot, and I’m able to apply knowledge to write, produce, and play. Everyone I meet who attends Berklee is so hardworking and talented, so the inspiration abounds. I am looking forward to finally
attending on-campus this fall!

You sometimes perform as part of the duo “Lily and Evan”. What do you like about those performances?
I perform as part of the acoustic duo, ‘Lily and Evan’, with Evan Cieplik. I enjoy working with him because every gig just feels like a jam session with my friend. I enjoy singing a mix of both of our solo original material, as well as songs we’ve co-written. Evan’s got a vast knowledge of music, so learning from him has helped me write music, play guitar, perform, and be a better musician in general.

Who are some other artists you've been listening to lately?
I take inspiration from many kinds of music, but I listen to indie, folk, and rock music the most often. Some of my biggest musical influences include; Elliott Smith, Jim Croce, Kurt Vile, Talking Heads, The Cure, Norah Jones, John Prine, Beck, Phoebe Bridgers, and Danny Elfman.

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?
My biggest career challenge is my self-doubt. Oftentimes, I question my competency and abilities. The music industry can be an extremely competitive place, which is one of my
least favorite aspects of being a musician. However, I always remember that as an artist, you’re only competing against yourself. If I can write a song that’s better than the last song I’ve written, play a gig better than I did last time, or promote myself in a more effective way than I have in the past, I am satisfied.

What are your immediate career goals?
My immediate career goals include; playing as many gigs with friends as I can, promoting my new song, ‘Calling To Say’, and producing my other projects. Once I can attend college on campus, I think I will have a better idea of what I want to do with my life. I’ve always been intrigued by performing, writing, and producing my music, so I intend on doing so as long as I am able.

---

I can't wait to see which direction she takes!

As always, I want to thank Lily for visiting, and for sending along the pictures to accompany the interview.

I know you’ll all want to follow along with Lily to see what she's up to. The best way is to visit her socials like Instagram and YouTube and visit her website. They're all great ways to keep track of everything she has going on. Of course, you can always find her music on Spotify.

You can also check out her Section 36 Music page. It's a perfect way to enjoy everything Lily has to offer all in one place.

Thanks again Lily, and good luck reaching your goals!
