Honestly I made the acoustic version because when I released the original version, I posted a TikTok comparing a voice memo of me playing the song to the final production, and one single person commented that they preferred the original stripped down, sadder version of the song. It’s not that I’m obsessed with making everyone happy (okay, maybe a little bit), but I agreed with that person that when I play the song solo it has a more raw, emotional feel to it. I thought people might like to hear a version like that. It’s funny because it’s been a full year now and the person who left that TikTok comment doesn’t even follow me so they have no idea they inspired a whole new version. But shoutout to them!

I'm sure that you're all huge fans of the latest EP from SARIKA, "Lessons Not Learned". I know that I can't stop listening to it. But whenever I find music I really enjoy, I want to learn all I can about it. I can only assume that you feel that way as well. Thankfully, SARIKA was willing to answer a few questions about the EP so we could all appreciate it even more.
Here's what she had to say!
What do you want listeners to know about EP?
The EP took over a year to record fully–we started in the fall of 2023 and finished just last month. I wrote the oldest song (“Something Blue”) in 2018 and the newest (“Paper Mind”) in 2024. It’s a pop EP overall, but there’s definitely a lot of different styles in there–”From Inside The House” has a very musical theater-y sound, “Paper Mind” draws from alt/indie rock influences, and “Nightrunner” is almost country pop (controversial take given people’s strong opinions on what is and isn’t country, but I’ve heard it from enough people that I don’t think it’s entirely off base).
How did you come up with the name for the EP?
“Lessons Not Learned” is a lyric from “Nightrunner,” the last song on the EP. I chose it because when I was looking for a common thread between all of the songs, I realized they’re all kind of about either me being foolish or someone else being foolish: “New Spring” is partially about me being emotionally clumsy in a relationship and putting my foot in my mouth; “Something Blue” is about pining over a man who has moved on with someone else; “From Inside The House” is about hypocrites who lack self awareness; “Paper Mind” is about my tendency to put others on a pedestal and base my identity on them; “Everything’s On Fire” is a critique of people who only care about their immediate bubbles in the face of climate change and global turmoil; “Nightrunner” is about getting back with an ex multiple times.
Do you have any favorite memories of the recording process?
Five friends came into the studio with me to record the gang vocals in the bridge of “From Inside The House.” It’s a home studio on the third floor of a house, it was the middle of the summer, and the AC was making noise so we had to turn it off while recording. We all got very sweaty and very close (literally and figuratively). I rememberall sticking our faces in the fan and window between takes to cool down. But we got it done! And got some yummy food and drinks after!

One thing that I find really interesting about the EP as a whole is that only half of the songs are about romantic relationships. As a pop artist I feel like the norm in my genre is to write primarily about love or breakups, and especially when I was younger, I felt a lot of pressure to write about that stuff even when it wasn’t a super significant part of my life. That’s how I ended up with songs like “Something Blue” and “Nightrunner,” which, fun fact, aren’t actually based on personal experience–I’ve never gotten back with an ex or had a dream that my ex was marrying someone else.
The three songs that aren’t about romance are “From Inside The House,” “Paper Mind,” and “Everything’s On Fire.” I think “Everything’s On Fire” in particular is interesting because it’s supposed to sound like a love song on the surface, but it’s really a critique about people’s preoccupation with their own individual lives and indifference to collective problems like the climate crisis. This meaning becomes especially clear in the bridge.
“Everything’s On Fire” also stands out to me sonically. I generally love a song that builds dramatically from the beginning to the end, but this one does it in a particularly drastic way, starting off with a super simple piano and voice arrangement, then growing to include very sweet sounding backing vocals and instrument parts, then finally taking a dark and chaotic turn in the bridge.

The way no words came about was me, Lavend3r, and Cole Daniels went on a trip to Minnesota. The reason we went to Minnesota was because John is from there. So we rented an Airbnb. We were there about a couple weeks and did a songwriters/producers/musicians camp sort of thing. While we were there one day I was about to walk out the door and John just yells at me like, “Hey check out the Dropbox. There's a file called “no words”. Check it out. The instrumental track is super super weird. I made it with Cole. They played the cello on it but it's super weird. I don't know if you're going to like it. But check it out, and if you do just topline it. Hop on it, write over it, and see what comes out.” And I was like ok. So as I was walking around Minnesota I was listening to the track and I was like this is so so weird I love it. I definitely want to try it and write something over it because it was something so different to what I had done before.
A few minutes later I walked to a park that was near the Airbnb, I sat down and I wrote the first half of the song. It was so funny because “no words” was not supposed to be the name of the song. It was just the name of the file because the track had “no words” on it. It was just instrumental. But as I was writing the song and I got to the chorus it just made sense to add it because of the subject of the song. It was about the situationship I had where nobody said a word. Literally we both felt something for each other but nobody said a word about it So just made sense to add it, and it was very kind of a meant to be moment.
So yeah, I wrote the first half of the song in that park and that same night John and I started recording the first half of the song. After recording that first half we were hearing it again and we got super excited about it because it was so cool. We both thought it was an amazing song. So he told me, “you have 30 minutes to write the rest of the song while I work on it and do my producer stuff. You have 30 minutes and we‘ll record the second half” and I was like let's do it. So that’s what I did. I sat down and wrote the second half while he was working on the first half and we recorded the rest of the song that same night. So we made it all basically in one day. The only thing that was done the next day was Nico added in some synth chords for the second verse. We made it super fast. It was a very easy to make song, it just kind of flowed very easily. So yeah that was how the song came about.
As for the photo shoot, since it's a sexy song I wanted it to be a sexy photo shoot. I was a bit nervous about it, not going to lie. But I was also very excited about it. I was like "you know what I'm committing to what the song is about". The photoshoot looks like I’m on a bed. But it’s actually the guest bathroom at my house. The photographer Jerry, he is my friend and he is amazing, needed a white wall and there was there was a big white wall in the guest bathroom at my house. So we we grabbed a couple covers and sheets and stuff like that and just put them on the floor. And that's where we shot all the promo photos and the cover photos for No Words. So that was very fun.
I think for the song that's pretty much all there is to talk about. But, yeah, go listen to No Words. It's such a fun sexy ethereal otherworldly type of song. For me it just transports me to another place because it’s just so different and the instrumentation and the vocal production everything is done to is honestly incredible. I’m so lucky to have the team that I do. Go check it out and expect to see much more from me soon.

I knew I wanted the artwork to include an unlit candle or a lightbulb that wasn’t turned on, to symbolize an idea that was never had, or a lesson that was never learned. And I also knew I wanted to wear the red corset that’s in the cover art, but initially I was just planning on sitting in a chair or something.
Then some friends and I were at the Tasty Burger in Fenway after one of them performed nearby, and we had had a couple of drinks. The counter and hand dryer in the Tasty Burger bathroom are bright red, and I was wearing a red sweater, so I was like “guys take a picture of me sitting on this right now.” I posted it on my Instagram and someone commented that it needed to be album art, and she was totally right.
So I went back to Tasty Burger in my corset and nice outfit with a photographer, wrapped string lights around my neck, and sat my ass back on that counter! I was kind of uncomfortable because between the tight corset and string lights around the neck I felt pretty constricted, plus we had to hide the battery pack by shoving it in my corset (plus editing out the wire and weird boxy bulge from it later), and I’m actually not resting my legs on the trash can at all because of how high my heels are, so it was kind of a work out to sit like that.
But any discomfort was totally worth it, because I was super happy with how the photos turned out! Then I wanted the hand dryer and soap logos gone, and I thought it’d be fun to incorporate the EP title and my artist name in a creative way, so I had another photographer friend Photoshop the hand dryer to say “SARIKA / Lessons Not Learned” instead of the “Xcelerator” logo. So that’s how my tipsy impromptu Instagram photo became the official EP cover!

TENSION HIGH was one of the four original songs that I was going to make with Lavend3r that were for my capstone project at Berklee. My capstone project was an EP and the four songs were going to be GODDAMN BABY!, UNAWARE, TENSION HIGH, and another one I won’t say right now because I have not released it yet (it’s coming soon). But, yeah, TENSION HIGH was one of the four originals. The thing is we started recording those, and they were so good, in our opinion they were great, so we just kept recording more and more and more things. We ended up tossing the EP in a way and just made a ton of songs that will eventually be an album.
TENSION HIGH was the third or fourth song that I made with Lavend3r, and that I had ever recorded in a studio. So I was way more comfortable at that point. I remember the first song I made with Lavend3r I was still kind of unsure of like where to put ad-libs or was unsure where to speak up about what I want and what I don’t want and the whole thing. I was still learning, and TENSION HIGH definitely felt more comfortable. A big thing, for example, that I remember that I felt super comfortable with was in the second verse and in the chorus you can hear some breaths that are off beat in the background. I felt that those were really cool and my friend John didn’t want them, but I fought for them. And I’m so glad that I did because I really love them. And you can really hear them more on the live track where my lead vocals are not there. But it’s really cool. I played the live track the other day for my friends and they were like “Oh my god! They’re so cool!” and I was so proud.
The song is about that situationship I talk about in UNAWARE and GODDAMN BABY! as well. I was in a class at Berklee, a songwriting class that I had to write a song for every week. And it could be about anything. At that point while I was taking the class I had that situationship so that was my inspiration at the time. My songs were basically my diary and I would write a song every week about what was happening. And TENSION HIGH at that point, every time I saw my situationship I felt the vibes…you know, the vibes. I felt them and felt that they wanted to say something and they didn’t and it was the same with me, right? It was more like, we’re in the same friend group, we don’t want to ruin anything. At the same time there’s something there and I would think about that person every time I wasn’t with them, and that’s why the chorus says “I’ll be thinking about you in the middle of the night”. The cool part about the song, in my opinion, is that it goes from my perspective to their perspective. That’s why the second chorus instead of saying I it says you…like "you’ll be thinking about me in the middle of the night” because the tension was there with the both of us.
It was really fun to record the song. I made the song with Lavend3r and Zani, who is an exceptional musician. They helped me build the song into what it is. Every song I made with Lavend3r, except for one we haven’t released yet, I always came in with the chords, the lyrics, the melody, everything and then John, Nicco and Zani would help me build them up. TENSION HIGH was a really really fun one. I wanted it to be rhythmic and bass heavy, which is why it starts with the bass. It starts simple instrumentally and it builds up over time and it’s really cool.
The photoshoot was really fun. I did the photoshoot with my manager Patricio Luna who’s also an amazing photographer. He does concert photography and he’s incredible. We kind of put a projector saying “tension high” everywhere and he added some eyes that were really sexy and cool. The vibe was like all red and it was really really cool. I also had a couple more friends there during the photoshoot who were in charge of lighting and audio. So they would basically play any song that they felt would inspire me to be sexy for the shoot which was so funny. And they pointed at me with red lights the whole time which were quite intense, I’m not going to lie, but it was fun.
Releasing the song has been really really fun. I love it. I think it’s a very summer vibe song and I really hope you love it too. I hope you love it as much as I do. And if you’re going through the same thing as I did at the time I hope you connect with the song and it’s a release and you know you’re not alone and it’s a human experience. And yeah I hope you just dance to it, vibe to it, let you use the song to help you get through it. You know what I mean. I hope you love the song as much as I do.

Once again, Duda has brought us behind the scenes and shared the story behind her newest release. I'm sure you enjoyed is as much as I did when she did this for us with her hit EP "Rumors". Now she's back with her newest single, "Should've Known" and everything that went into it.
Here's what she had to say!
Everything has been a wile ride and I’m grateful we could make it work. It is my best and greatest release yet. I know everyone says their latest release is their best. But I mean it. This one has so much heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears in it from so many amazing human beings.
I wrote the song over winter break, in December 2023. My life was chill at that moment and I wasn’t feeling very inspired to write songs. But I wrote this one based on a college friend from Berklee. It was the first time I wrote something not from my point of view. It was just a very interesting exercise. Honestly, when it was done, I didn’t really like it that much. I wrote it the same day I was inspired to write a couple other songs. All in different aspects that I’m used to doing. This one I wrote in the Point of view of one of my closest friends who keeps going out with guys who don’t treat her right. And, in the end she keeps saying that she should have know. And we keep telling her but she never listens. This is shown in the first verse when the first thing I say is “I should’ve listened to my friends”.
So it talks about friendships, break-ups and relationships in the current times we’re living in. I feel like it’s current and relatable for women these days, and especially for friends. So I really like that about this song. But, funnily enough, I didn’t really like the song when I finished it. I didn’t put many expectations on it. So I kept it in the depths of my voice messages because I never saw a future for the song. I thought the melodies were cheesy and for some reason I didn’t really connect with them that much, so I never saw potential in it. But one day I received a call from my producer, who also produced Criminal, and he asked if I had any songs to produce for a school project. I showed him multiple songs, but he was unconvinced. So I sent him Should’ve Known but told him I don’t really like this one, just so you know. But he really loved it and made me believe in the song which took some time because I still really didn’t like it for some reason.
But, we took five months to produce it, which is the longest time I’ve taken to complete a song. It took so long because we were making sure the song was perfect and nothing was missing. And we were constantly updating and changing things to make sure it was perfect. And, honestly, I remember when I received the final demo I was in shock because the song was so good. I’m not saying this because it’s my song. It’s genuinely so good. And a lot of my friends who have heard the song are obsessed with it as well.
You can definitely include me on that list too! "Should've Known" is such a great song. You should definitely listen to it for yourself.
Thanks again, Duda, for sharing this story with us.
If you know me, you know I love the behind the scenes stuff. I’m the guy who looks backwards on It’s a Small World to see how everything works. So, when I heard “Rumors” by Duda, I asked if she’d be willing to share some of the background behind the EP. She thankfully agreed, and here are some of the things I learned.
It was a quick process. From the decision to actually make the EP to completion was about three months. As someone who had never released a song before, it made for a crazy three months, but it was so worth it. Since she is an independent artist, so much of it was up to her. Sure, she had amazing friends help out, but everything from the marketing, planning, scheduling the photo shoot, the concept, to the lyric video was all on her shoulders. It was so much work. Since this was her first time though this, she thought it would be easier than it ended up being. But it was absolutely worth all the extra effort.
She has always wanted to work in music, as a singer and songwriter, but was never sure she was good enough. That’s probably a common theme amongst young songwriters. But, she wrote “Lost Messages” in April and knew it was THE song. This was the song that she could take that leap with. This was the one to start the process rolling. The next day, she decided she might as well go all in and write a whole EP. She started figuring out what it would actually take to make it happen. She didn’t have a blueprint, so she felt her way along on her own. The rest of the songs were written with that EP in mind, other than “Done”. That was written a year earlier and could have been a single on its own, but it really matched the energy and vibe of the EP she was creating. It felt right to include it, especially as the last track…”Done”. The last song written was “Memories” and it’s honestly her favorite. It came together so quickly that she wrote it in about an hour. It almost didn’t make the EP but she loved the lyrics and the vibe, and decided it fit well with the concept.
The most stressful part ended up being trying to find the phone for the photo shoot! She had a picture in her mind of the phone she wanted to use, and knew it should be an older style, but she didn’t have one. Friends tried to convincer her to just use a new phone, but she knew what she wanted. Thankfully a friend was able to track down a phone for her. She had been thinking a red or pick phone would be the way to go, but really likes how the silver one ended up looking. It was a marathon to find the phone, but she was eventually able to find her vision and do the shoot.
The shoot, and the studio session itself, was a lot of fun since she had so many friends involved in the process. One of her friends did all the mixing and mastering so the whole process was an incredibly enjoyable experience.
She’s a big Swiftie, and loves easter eggs. So, you’ll find a lot of them on Rumors if you look close enough. From the lyrics, to the photo shoot, color palette, to the order of the songs. There’s so much to see if you know where to look.
The order of the songs actually tells a story. The five tracks represent the five stages of grief. What’s neat, though, is that she feels different people may interpret the sings differently and find the different stages in different songs, depending on their own life experiences. It really allows each person to enjoy the album in their own special way.
Overall she really enjoyed the process of making “Rumors” and can’t wait to see what the future brings for her.
And, neither can I. I’m so glad she was willing to share these stories. I hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I enjoyed hearing them.
If you want more stories about Rumors, Duda has released a BTS video, which you absolutely need to watch. Check it out now.
Be sure to go listen to “Rumors” to see what stages you find in each song.
