Getting To Know Treble on Huntington: The Surprises

Northeastern University's first all-women a cappella group, who "showcase the unique styles of their soloists along with the hard work and artistry of the entire group." 

Does everyone know what they're getting into when they ju]oin such a fantastic group? Is there anything that surprises them? I asked the members of the Treble On Huntington that very question to try to find out. 

Sometimes the biggest surprise should be no surprise. As Alyssa mentioned, “I was initially intimidated by the time commitment of joining a group, but now I really look forward to rehearsals and performances, and I'm super excited about future trips!” Eve had similar thoughts when she added, “The biggest surprise about being a member of Treble on Huntington has been how close everyone is and how we really are 'best friends who sing'! I never thought I would have such a strong friend group in college, but through Treble, I have made amazing friends, had such inspiring and cool experiences, and even found the best roommate!” Mika even pointed out that it should have been surprising by saying, “It's not really a surprise but I love how everyone in Treble is so welcoming and always brings positive energy to everything we do.”

Edom echoed that sentiment by saying, “The biggest surprise about being a member of Treble on Huntington is having the ability to grow not only as a singer but also as an individual. I feel like I have changed so much and learned so much about myself since joining Treble and I am really grateful for that.”

Mya recalled the whole experience as something she didn’t expect. “how comfortable and safe I felt so quickly. Usually it takes me a really long time to get to this point with new people, but it's such a genuine and great group of people that let me be myself. I also feel like I would be more scared to sing in front of others within my own group (idk why I find it easier to perform for crowds over sending videos of me singing/individual exercises with my own group) but I don't feel as much of that sense of fear anymore which I did not think I would get past. I also was surprised to feel special to a group of people. I'm used to being less involved and quieter in group settings but I feel appreciated and that people enjoy my company as much as I enjoy theirs.”

Sometimes the singing style itself can be new and different. Sarah mentioned, “I was not expecting to sing alto all the time as i’ve been a soprano my entire singing career, but I’m really enjoying it!” Shir also mentioned the singing itself by adding, “The biggest surprise so far has been that even though our rehearsals can be lengthy at times, I still get excited for every rehearsal we have! Being in the group is certainly a time commitment, but it's worth every minute.”

Abigail really summed it up by adding, “I think it's been that I've been able to connect with so many incredible people on such a deep level through just a shared love for singing. I love each and every Treb with my whole heart, and I'm so grateful to have shared my college experience with them.”

And that’s what it’s all about. It's so wonderful that I'm sure every member expected to be joining something pretty special, but were still surprised by what the became a part of. It doesn't get much better than that.

Get To Know Treble Threat - The Experience

Treble Threat is Berklee College of Music's only all-women and non-binary a cappella group, providing an immersive and empowering musical experience within an a cappella environment. 

Last week we learned what led these amazing performers to decide to try out for the group? Now that they're members, what experiences stand out in their minds? I asked the members of the group to try to find out. 

Big performances like the International Championship of Collegiate A Capella were obviously memorable experiences for some.

Business Manager Grace Carr was in that group, stating her favorite memory was, “ICAAs this year because I loved our set and had so much fun with everyone.”

New member Carolina Daura settled on that as well, saying “honestly, the bond that we have created ever since we met just makes me enjoy everything we do together even more. We are all truly like a family and I always look forward to rehearsals. But I think I enjoyed participating in ICCAs with them the most. It was an amazing experience.”

Another big performance was the A Cappella Showcase right at Berklee.

New member Allie Forlini hit on that one, saying “my favorite moment with Treble Threat so far has been performing with them at the Acappella Showcase at the Berklee Performance Center. I feel like that experience made us closer as a group of people who love each other just as much as we love the music!”

Social media manager Alexa Aronson agreed by saying, “my favorite experience / memory of being in the group was the Berklee A Cappella Showcase. Our set was absolutely incredible, and each A Cappella Group at Berklee performed. It’s an amazing experience to meet new people, network, and hear talent.”

New member Michelle Langelier added, “my favorite experience thus far with Treble Threat has been the Berklee A Capella Showcase!! Singing at the BPC twice in my first year at Berklee is insane, and I’m so grateful that I’ve gotten such awesome opportunities from this group.”

President Ava Panza had an experience with her specific role, explaining “my favorite experience in Treble Threat so far is holding the auditions this past September. It is my first year running the group and hearing everyone who wanted to be a part of the group and choosing who would be a part of it was great.”

Sometimes the best memories from a group experience come from the more mundane everyday activities. The sorts of moments that really resonate.

Assistant music director Amelie Dejean Subirats felt “my favorite experience with the group has been learning music together and creating the emotions behind our performances.”

New member Veronica Bain added, “one of my favorite thingsthat we do together is the improvisation exercise. Each part comes up with interlocking melodies and harmonies. It’s creative, interactive, and playful group bonding.”

Similarly, new member Jasperina van Stuijvenberg said “my favorite experience has been all the times we hang out. Every rehearsal and event that we decide to do together outside of performing is always so fun and therapeutic. It’s nice to be around a bunch of people who understand you and who can give advice! I really just love it it’s a big part of my experience here at Berklee. 

New member Maggie Welch added, “my favorite experience with the group has been staying after rehearsals to create harmonies and sing with them in the stairwells!”

Another new member, Chloe Park, remembered “at one of our rehearsals, we had a time to emotionally read the tune that we’ve been working on, ‘Why am I like this’. We got to hear what that song meant to each of us and shared our stories. It was an amazing experience to get to know each other and to be attached to the song more. I cannot forget that moment.”

New Member Ceili Cordero really summed up the Treble Threat experience by saying, “my favorite memory is when the whole group sang light of the clear blue morning in a circle with our backs turned, just listening and connecting with each other through music and sound.”

That’s just what it’s all about.

Get To Know Treble Threat

Treble Threat is Berklee College of Music's only all-women and non-binary a cappella group, providing an immersive and empowering musical experience within an a cappella environment. 

What makes these amazing performers decide to try out for such a group? I asked the members of the group to try to find out. It looks like a couple reasons came to the forefront. 

For some it’s simply the opportunity to sing a cappella

President Ava Panza said, "I wanted to join Treble Threat because I always wanted to do a cappella, and my high school never offered it since it was so small. Also, the fact that the group was all women/non-binary made me feel more welcomed."

Added new member Carolina Daura, "Pitch Perfect has been my favorite movie since it came out and when I came to Berklee and heard about Treble Threat, I had no doubt that it was the group that I wanted to join. And now I can say, without a doubt, that I am living my pitch perfect dreams alongside these amazing humans"

Another new member, Chloe Park, "was looking for a club where I can sing with beautiful people, and I got to know about Treble Threat. The whole atmosphere of the audition was super nice, chill, and supportive and the call back was even better!! All the old members were so nice and so were the new members!! I really wanted to be part of the group where we cheer and support each other, sing with one heart and become a family."

New member Ceili Cordero agreed, saying "I wanted to join Treble Threat because I missed the feeling of singing and beatboxing for a group that shared my values and made great music together."

For others the group's draw is the chance to join an incredible community

Business manager Grace Carr felt, "I wanted to join Treble Threat because it seemed like a fun environment to be a part of."

Similarly, social media manager Alexa Aronson said, "I joined Treble Threat because I wanted to be a part of an amazing community with such talented musicians / people. It is a great way to get your foot into the door with great talent and opportunities."

New member Jasperina van Stuijvenberg went even further, saying "I wanted to join Treble Threat because I wanted to find a community at Berklee. I was really struggling to find people in my first semester and I had done a capella in the past and loved it! I saw on Instagram that Treble Threat was auditioning and I could sense they all had a great kind of vibe. My audition experience was amazing and I was shocked to get in, as I am not a vocal principal and I didn’t know if I was good enough. Now a lot of the members are some of my best friends and I love them all and singing with them."

The inclusivity was an important part for assistant music director Amelie Dejean Subirats, who added "I wanted to join Treble Threat because it was an inclusive space to sing with others, and the community within it was really sweet!"

That was echoed by new member Michelle Langelier who added, "I wanted to join Treble Threat to have an inclusive and supportive way to get involved on campus my first semester. Definitely one of the best choices I could’ve made!"

Of course, some of the new members were drawn to the entire package offered by Treble Threat.

New member Veronica Bain summed it up nicely by saying, "I wanted to join Treble Threat when I saw the a cappella showcase in the BPC last spring! I did a cappella in high school, and when I saw how amazing and advanced the Berklee groups were I really wanted to join. I love hanging out with everyone in the group, we’re like a little family. Treble Threat has given me a much-needed sense of community."

Another new member Maggie Welch added, "I have always loved a cappella and Treble Threat seemed like it had such a welcoming and genuine environment! I immediately felt like I had made amazing friends in the auditions."

And new member Allie Forlini really wrapped it all up by saying, "I’ve been in a cappella groups ever since middle school, and I’ve absolutely loved them. Being in a tight-knit community of musicians has always been important to me. I found Treble Threat through social media and from the start, really loved their vibe and goal to empower women and nonbinary folk. I wanted to join Treble Threat because of my love for a cappella as well as my desire to meet a group of wonderful people."
