Section 36 Music has another visitor! Haley Chic is a wonderful singer, who who you may know from her outstanding single "Slow Down". I was so glad she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, future goals, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

I’m a huge fan of your single “Slow Down”. What can you tell me about it?

Thanks so much! I am someone to always be on the go, whether I'm out with friends, working, playing a show, traveling etc. I'm also someone who tends to worry about EVERYTHING! I wrote this song about taking a step back, enjoying the ride and loving yourself just the way you are. 

What was your favorite part of the recording process?

I recorded "Slow Down" at 37 Productions with Sean McGlaughlin. He was really fun to work with and trade ideas. Whenever I record I send a demo of just my vocals and acoustic guitar. It's so amazing to watch your songs transform from a little acoustic number to an actual masterpiece! 

You’re a graduate of Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest thing that’s done for your career? 

I made a lot of connections at Berklee in Boston and in Nashville. Through that I've been able to play really cool shows and make a ton of friends in the industry all over New England and in Music City. Berklee also gave me the knowledge and credentials to teach voice, guitar and piano lessons. 

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

I love Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlisle and Miranda Lambert. But I also love Foo Fighters, Everclear and Lizzo. I love everything! It's fun to find new songwriters and listen to their music! Some of the best music coming out is from independent artists. Growing up, my parents had a million CD's and records so I learned a lot from them. 

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

I would say my biggest career challenge is not comparing my journey to others. It's especially hard with social media. Everyone is so talented and we're all on our own paths! 

What are your immediate career goals?

So much of my career was ruined in covid. I was an event planner and lost my job and I couldn't perform. So many places I played either closed or changed management. It almost feels like I had to rebuild everything I had been working for. I feel like currently I'm just working on that, being happy and remembering to "Slow Down"!

Aryn Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Aryn is an incredibly talented singer, who last year released her debut EP "No Labels". I was so glad she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, future goals, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

I’m a huge fan of your debut album “No Labels”. What can you tell me about it?

Thank you so much! "No Labels" was a pandemic project that came to life when I really started taking myself seriously as a songwriter. It is a story of my life from about 2015 to now and each song represents a different aspect of my life in that time period in chronological order. It started off as a couple singles, and then an EP, and then an album because the songs just spilled out of me. It actually got its name because of my friend and collaborator on the album Natalie DiPeitro. We were in the writing session for "Bulletproof" (Which ended up being an almost 7 hour zoom call where we completed the whole writing process and a demo) and I was explaining to her how I struggle with putting my music into a genre because I feel like it doesn't necessarily just fit under one, and she suggested I call the album "No Labels" and embrace that. It fit so well because that idea of not fitting into one box or one label has always been a part of my life whether its socially, musically, at one point my sexuality, and that's a message I always want to put forward is to be yourself and don't feel the pressure from people in your life or society to fit yourself somewhere you don't feel you belong.  

What was your favorite part of the recording process?

My favourite part is always working with my producer, mixing engineer, mastering extraordinaire Saul De Anda. I love recording my vocals and layering harmonies, but my favourite part for sure is watching everything come together. I am super involved in every part of the production and it's such an incredible and collaborative process. There is nothing like hearing a song come to life in a way that I couldn't even imagine. 

You’re currently attending Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest thing that’s doing for your career?

It has introduced me to some of the most incredible people in the industry, from professionals to my friends. It's networking but in such an authentic way. You build relationships, jam together, get vulnerable and end up making so many incredible connections. It also solidifies a lot of knowledge I had but didn't know I did, and stretches me as an artist. Probably the most surreal thing to come from Berklee thus far is meeting Harry Connick Jr and Natalie Weiss. They are two people I have looked up to for a very long time and wouldn't have gotten that opportunity without Berklee.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

I have so many. The first person who sparked my brain for music was Charlotte Church. I was classically trained and she has multiple classical vocal albums that I would listen to every night going to sleep. The next big artist for me was Lady Gaga. Some more influential artists for me are Keith Urban, Shania Twain, Michael Buble, Il Divo,  Harry Connick Jr, Pentatonix, Harry Styles, Adele, Demi Lovato, Yebba, Lizzy McAlpine, Billie Eilish, Avi Kaplan, Olivia Rodrigo, Blake Shelton, and Taylor Swift. I have so many people who I love for so many different reasons and they all have contributed to some aspect of my musicianship today. 

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

I think my biggest career challenge has been confidence, as ridiculous as that sounds. I am a very shy, introverted, and apologetic person - so much so that it's quite interesting that I have always chosen this extroverted career path. It requires a lot of energy to push past insecurities and present yourself to your audience. The mental aspect of this industry is so huge and it's something I don't think is spoken about enough. Making sure that you're in a healthy place as a human before being a musician is key. Comparison to other artists, being in it for the "right reasons", and staying authentic are all things that every artist deals with to some extent. Another aspect of this industry that is so important is how you use your platform, however large or small it is. And knowing your audience might not always agree with it. I am a huge people pleaser who wants to make everyone happy and I have had to learn the hard way that it is never going to be possible to do that. 

What are your immediate career goals?

I am currently working towards my degree which will be from my second post-secondary educational institution. I am working towards releasing more music, I have more originals than I know what to do with at the moment. I am honestly just writing as much as I can, making as many connections as I can, and performing as much as I can!

"BEKINDREWIND" is the latest single from the immensely talented singer SABZ!

Lui$a Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Lui$a is an amazing singer, fresh off the release of her EP "Limelight". I was so glad she wanted to visit with us and discuss her music, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Lui$a visits Section 36 Music!

I absolutely loved your EP “Limelight”. What can you tell me about it?

I began working on this project probably two years ago, I was 15 when I wrote Daily as the lead track and then continued writing the other songs for the EP the following year. All of the songs are written by me and produced by my father and me. It was great to have a theme for the project, that helped me dictate the sound of the songs and give them that certain “spice” they needed. With this EP, I wanted to show my versatility as an artist, so I came up with a project that has a backstory which is super interesting and has an incredible list of songs! “Limelight" used to be a club in New York where everyone felt free to express themselves.I hope to acknowledge (with this project) the artists, models, painters and musicians that all made Limelight a comforting space for the attendees like Madonna, Grace Jones, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Each song tells a different story, gives a different vibe and has a different sound, just like the “Limelight” attendees.  

What was your favorite part of the recording process?

My favorite part of the recording process was probably getting to hear the final project and writing the songs. All of the songs have a different meaning and are a fusion of different genres, which makes them more intriguing to my listeners.

Are there any other projects you’re working on? 

Currently, I’m focused on working with other artists as a producer and songwriter at the moment, such as writing songs for them, producing and recording for them and so on. I love writing and producing for others since I enjoy exchanging creative energy with them and learning from their working ethic as performing artists.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

My music is inspired by a range of artists from different genres of music like: Jun Fukamachi, A$AP Rocky, A tribe Called Quest & Rina Sawayama, each of them displaying a different and unique type of style, all of which can be recognized on my tracks, thus presenting a contemporary yet ageless sound to the mainstream scene.

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

It would definitely have to be trying to get you voice heard as a female producer. Female producers often get underestimated in their field of work because of the small percentage they make up in the music production industry, that percentage being 2% female producers and 98% male producers. But, I think that with work and self-promotion, I will break this barrier and help many female musicians secure their spot in the music industry.

What are your immediate career goals?

I always carry a notepad with me that has all my bucket list goals written on it and one of my immediate career goals is to be able to inspire as many young female musicians as I can. Other than that, I have many unusual goals I have written on my notepad such as; to be a judge on Ru Paul’s Drag Race, meet Madonna, make a soundtrack for a sci-fi or a drama movie and attend Battle Hymn (club) in New York.

Sayaka Visits Section 36 Music

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Sayaka is an incredible singer, fresh off the release of her latest single "Maybe (It'll Work Out)". I was so glad she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

I really enjoyed your recent single “Maybe (It’ll Work Out)”. What can you tell me about it?

I wrote this song right at the start of the pandemic, and at the time I was in a relationship with someone who had recently graduated from Berklee College of Music. I still had a year left of school and my partner was planning on moving to NYC, thinking the pandemic wouldn't last as long as it did. I was preparing myself to do a long-distance relationship from Boston to NYC  with someone I really loved, and I was hesitant which is what inspired the song! 

Do you have any other music in the works?

I do have more music on the way! I'm currently working on an EP - it's in the works but the production of everything is nearly finished! Super exciting and a bit different from everything I've done in the past. My music always reflects stages of my life, and this EP is a reflection of my life post-graduation, so it's a bit darker (but I'm ok I promise) 

You’re currently attending Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest way that is helping your career? 

I actually graduated from Berklee a semester before I was supposed to, but I would say that making connections and the performance opportunities that Berklee has to offer is most valuable in my career. 

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

I have a lot of influences, my close friends know that my father has always been a great inspiration for me, as he was the one who got me into music in the first place. Other than him, I'm inspired by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sara Bareilles, and Bon Iver!

What would you say is your biggest career challenge?

My biggest career challenge would have to be being openly vulnerable on social media. It's not that I don't want to, I definitely do because I'd love for my music to reach people who face the same obstacles as I do, but it hasn't been easy. I hope that by me doing that, it could help someone else feel better knowing they're not alone. 

What are your immediate career goals?

I believe that if something is meant to happen, it will. My immediate career goal is to get this EP out and have my very first music video filmed!! One step at a time.

“Dreamhouse" by Liya (April 29, 2022 Release)

"Dreamhouse" is the latest single from the amazing singer Liya! 

You are going to want to listen to this song as soon as you can as often as you can! What can you expect from the song? Liya talked a bit about it during her recent interview with us... 

“Dreamhouse" is a dark pop single about a twisted world, a saccharine with a few cracks. I created the distorted look down the rabbit hole of a warped Barbie world, while referencing social pressures women face such as body image.

SABZ Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! SABZ is an incredible singer, preparing to release her latest single "BEKINDREWIND". I was so excited she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say.

I really enjoyed your recent single “Essentials”. What was it like putting that together? 

So my producer VibeztheProd and co writer Emaan Zadjali are both Berklee Grads, incredible artists and two of my closest friends. Vibez and I had wanted to explore creating a song together so he sent me a few beats. When the one he sent me for Essentials came up, I instantly conjured up a topline. Emaan really helped wrap the whole thing together, I already knew she was a master when it came to wordplay so working with the two of them to create this track was such fun experience. 

Do you have any other projects you’re currently working on?

Yes! My new single BEKINDREWIND comes out on May 6th!  I’ve been working on this one for almost two years so I’m really excited to finally put it out into the world. But aside from that I have a few tracks that should be coming out really soon so keep a lookout! 

You’re a graduate of Berklee College of Music. What’s the biggest way that helped your career?  

I think if it weren’t for Berklee, I wouldn’t have had the chance to really hone in on my craft. I’ve met and worked with so many talented people there who have also become lifelong friends. However, of course like any creative institution theres an element of competition but it allowed me to learn how to motivate myself to work harder to achieve my goals.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

To be honest, that’s always been a very hard question because my musical upbringing came with such an eclectic selection of musical styles ranging from Pop to R&B to Hip Hop, EDM to even Middle Eastern music since I’m Iranian. But I guess for example I’m a huge fan of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Pink many early 2000s pop figures which you can kind of see shine through in songs of mine such as “Defective”. 

What would you say is your biggest career challenge? 

This kind of ties into my answer for the third question. I know I mentioned that competition can be motivating but of course it’s easier said than done. Theres definitely plenty of days where I’ll feel frustrated and start comparing myself to others, but I try my best to remind myself to look at it from a standpoint of wanting to learn from them instead.

What are your immediate career goals?

So in my career as an artist, I’ve actually never gigged! In 2020 I was supposed to sort of get that started when I released Defective but then the pandemic interfered with that. This year I’m hoping to change that and start performing. Besides that, I’m also looking to collaborate  with more producers based in the Pop or EDM scene.
