What can you expect from the EP? Well, I'd never be able to discuss it as well as Moni herself. So, here's how she described it.

"HOW TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CONCEPT OF FORGETTING Is a conceptual alternative pop record from Boston Based artist, Moni Grace. For Moni’s third studio project, she focuses her creative story telling abilities on concepts such as heartache, love, trauma and healing. How To Fall In Love with the Concept of Forgetting started as drafts of love letters or poems originally scripted in the notes section of Moni’s iPhone between February and June of 2020. With each innovative, structurally crafted line from each emotional piece pulling mainly from sentences from conversations, dreams, characters from movies, real life experiences to even tinder bios— Moni is able to prove that you can find healing through story telling in any environment, with any project, any mind-State or in any relationship. The artists’ goal in the songwriting process for this project, is the importance of using your voice, and its power. Also, not allowing yourself to be silenced by whatever trauma, abuse, situation or experience that tries to brand you to its’ toxicity or weight. 

How to Fall In Love with the Concept of Forgetting is the perfect collection of the liminal moments that we often forget about in our daily lives, but are encouraged to never physically forget about. This is because of the significance behind the memories in which they were created from. This idea is specifically present in the first track, “Five, Since”. 

The second track, “All Mine”, goes further into the concept of liminality, and the meaning those simplistic encounters may contain. The theme of relying on memories, including the dream of a person, rather than the actual person in the present tense to fill voids is explicitly prevalent as well. 

The idea of being rescued, or saved emotionally or physically from individualized trauma in relation to PTSD plays a major role in the thesis behind “Jack + Rose”, the last track on the EP. 

In conclusion, HOW TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CONCEPT OF FORGETTING is the perfect summer record for anyone who uses those concepts as methods for escapism or healing."

 

I couldn't agree more! Every song on the EP brings Moni's style to the forefront.

The music drags you in and allows the empowering lyrics to envelop you. While each song stands on its own, they play off each other to form a complete unit. It's something you'll want to hear over and over.

Merlin Visits Section 36!

So, let's see what happens when Merlin visits Section 36!

I really enjoyed your single “Love”. What can you tell me about it?

"Love" is the first song I ever recorded in-studio. I wrote part of it 3 years ago when I was thinking about past relationships and the fantasy ideals that we're taught growing up. I brought it to Late Boomers Club in the studio and we just got to writing and working. It really came to life! It's essentially a cautionary tale to my younger self. I wanted it to feel moody and mystical. The whole process was cathartic and really lit a fire under me. The track is co-written and produced by LBC, they're incredible. 

Do you see more studio work in your future?

100%! Before COVID hit I was planning on meeting LBC in LA to record a couple of new singles. While the trip has been postponed for now, I'm writing a lot and we're starting to work via Zoom to get some of the tracks started.

The music video for “Love” is also amazing. What was it like to put that together?

That was a blast! We got the idea of filming on the beach when we started recording in the studio. The red dress is a grown up version of a dress I'm wearing as a kid on the single cover. The white version is supposed to be this better version of me who knows that self love is the first and most important love. It was so much fun to shoot, I know I look all serious in the shots but we were laughing most of the time behind the scenes! By the end of the shots I was drenched and covered in sand. That dress is  A LOT heavier after getting soaked! 

Who or what would you consider to be your biggest musical influences?

I grew up watching/listening to Top 100 channels and whatever CDs my parents were able to take with them when we emigrated from Albania. I went through many phases and genres of music, like country and screamo. I was even obsessed with a band called Tokio Hotel for a good 2 years! Now I mostly listen to Pop, Hip Hop and House music along with Albanian Pop music. My all time favorite artists are Beyonce, Hayley Williams, and Dua Lipa. I gravitate towards artists, especially women, who exude authenticity and freedom through their music and energy then go into the real world and use their influence to make positive change. 

Other than COVID, what would you say is your biggest career challenge?

My biggest career challenge would be being realistic about what I can accomplish

alone and when I need to ask for help. I always want to do more and push, and do as much as I can by myself. But the truth is no one ever did anything truly great, all alone. It's why it took me a while to find a studio I wanted to work with and essentially be vulnerable with. But I'm glad I did, working in the studio with LBC and the Red 13 team has sparked even more creativity inside me. I'm accomplishing things I could have only dreamed of years ago.

What are your immediate career goals?

I have a couple of singles I'd like to release soon. One of them will have a music video! I'm stoked about these tracks, they're more dancy but empowering. I always feel super confident after blasting them! Aside from that, I'm hoping to get to LA as soon as it's safe to do so to record an EP to be released in 2021. Beyond that, the sky's the limit!

I absolutely loved your debut EP “Latitude”. What was it like to put that together? 
Putting together Latitude was such an incredible experience from beginning to end. It’s my first release, so it was amazing to see my songs come to life for the first time in the studio as we built each track up with harmonies and new layers. I was extremely lucky to be able to record the album with some of the best musicians I know; everyone – bandmates and engineers alike - brought a unique style that made the whole recording process enjoyable and a lot of fun. 

Do you have a favorite song from the EP? 

“Hideaway” is probably my favorite song from the EP. It has such a different feel from the others, with a much more laid-back, acoustic vibe that I love. The simplicity of the drums, the solid bass line, and the warm fingerpicking really make it stand out from the other tracks. It’s one of my favorites to play live! 

You are a student at Berklee College of Music. What’s the most important thing that experience is doing for your career? 
Attending Berklee has been incredibly rewarding. Each experience has helped me grow as a musician and a person - from taking courses on different parts of the music industry, to working on developing new songwriting techniques, and everything in between. The best part, though, has been collaborating with other students; they’re all so inspiring, creative, and talented, and I feel really lucky to be able to work with them. 

What is your favorite part about performing in front of a live audience? 
The best part of performing in front of a live audience, I think,

is being able to meet and interact with new people through music. The beauty of playing out is that you never really know what’s going to happen, and the listeners play a big role in that. A musician can practice day and night, but the audience will always impact the show, which is amazing. It’s also a chance to branch out. Whether it’s telling the story behind a song, or revamping a classic through a cover, it’s a new and different experience every time. 

Your Instagram account has several informal videos of you singing. What do you enjoy about creating and sharing those? 
Instagram is such a great platform for creators, and what I enjoy most about it is being able to share what I’m working on and see what other people are working on. I always love hearing new music, especially from independent artists, so it’s exciting to open the app and hear some new songs. The platform has created such a community for artists, and I’m thankful to be part of it. 

Right now, what would you say is your biggest non-COVID related career challenge? 
Currently, my biggest career challenge is wearing multiple hats, although I’m incredibly thankful for the experience. As an independent musician, everything I do is a very hands- on, yet educational, process. Each aspect has allowed me to catch a glimpse into a new side of the music industry – everything from marketing to promotion and distribution. Not only have I learned a lot with each new experience, but I have a strong appreciation for the teams behind the scenes that help build and maintain an artist’s career. 

What are your immediate career goals? 
Recording and releasing new music are my immediate career goals. I’m still in the early stages of achieving these goals, but I’m excited to really dive in and get the process started. There’s nothing quite like polishing up an original and putting it out into the world!

“Not In Love" by Christiana Berenguer (Release date July 30, 2020)

“Not In Love" is the latest single from the supremely talented Christiana Berenguer! 

And if you're anything like me, you'll want to listen to it again and again!

I know I've mentioned before that I fell in love with Christiana's music the first time I heard her perform at Fenway Park. Saying I was "blown away" doesn't begin to cover it. I've been waiting for a while now for her to release some new music, and it's finally here! I can confidently say it was worth the wait. As always, Christiana does a great job combining her exquisite vocals with the music to make a combination that raises both to new levels. Whether you focus on the powerful lyrics of the (not in) love song, or allow yourself to get lost in the music, you won't want the song to end. Give it a listen, and you'll know exactly what I mean.

You will soon be releasing your debut EP “Absence of Color”. What can you tell me about it?

I have never been more excited to release a piece of work. This EP has truly lived and breathed with me. I have spent so much time with it. It changed with me, it moved with me. It really represents who I am and how I function.

I don't like to pick favorites but, Pink and Blue makes me feel some type of way. Put that on and close your eyes and boom, you're transported. Wherever your mind goes, it will take you. It's pretty crazy.

Who or what would you consider to be your biggest musical influences?

Man, I adore Gaga. I think the fearlessness she owns is insane. Very inspiring. I live for David Bowie. How one person could own so many different personas.. that's powerful. 

You’re a graduate of Berklee College of Music. What’s the most important thing that did for your career?

Well, without Berklee I would not have created everything I have created. I've never been a "school person". My grades were always horrendous, never really cared for any of it. I got my full ride at Berklee and I was like..whoa. This is serious. I don't know where I would be without that.

Other than COVID, what would you say is your biggest career challenge?

I'm a major perfectionist. I think if I wasn't, I'd have five times the amount of music I have out. But I think that's what makes everything I do so special to me. It's so perfectly crafted to my liking. By the time it's out, it's my baby. I love it.

What are your immediate career goals?

The releases aren't going to stop any time soon. I have another single coming out September 19th. It's a game changer. Really switching up my sound and making something so new and exciting. Definitely keep an eye out for that. And to all my independent artists out there, this is our time to build each other up. We need to show some serious support, especially now. It's time to push that music out there and shamelessly promote everything we do. Sending Love.
