So, let's see what happens when E.L visits Section 36 Music!
I absolutely loved your recent single, “Old Days”. What can you tell me about it?
This song, "Old Days," is about complex feelings I felt upon reconnecting with a friend from the past. Through the lyrics, I delve into the internal struggle of wanting to believe that the person has changed for the better while also being haunted by past hurts when I see this person again. Throughout the song, I come to realize that perhaps my own resentment was preventing me from seeing the positive changes in my friend. It's an emotional journey that explores themes of personal growth, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
You’re currently attending Berklee College of Music. What makes Berklee the right choice for you?
For me, Berklee represents more than just a music school. It's a place where I can connect with artists from around the world, broaden my musical horizons, and explore new creative possibilities. The cultural richness and diversity of talent at Berklee inspire me every day and push me to push my own boundaries. Additionally, the many opportunities offered by Berklee, such as auditions, master classes, and internships, enrich my academic and professional journey, allowing me to build a strong network in the music industry. You’re a member of the Berklee a cappella group Pitch Slapped. What is that experience like?
Being part of Pitch Slapped is a dream come true for me. Inspired by films like "Pitch Perfect," I've always been fascinated by the art of a cappella and the dynamics of vocal groups. Being a member of Pitch Slapped allows me to explore new vocal techniques, deepen my understanding of harmony, and develop close bonds with my fellow musicians. Despite the challenges and ups and downs, even if I just met them, I see the group as a family where passion for music reigns.Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?
My musical influences are vast and diverse, ranging from Stevie Wonder, going to Nirvana, to Billie Eilish, and including French artists like Edith Piaf, Ben l'oncle Soul, Daft Punk and Stromae. Each artist has contributed to shaping my own musical identity, inspiring me to explore different genres and styles. I strive to listen to a wide range of music from around the world to fuel my creativity and enrich my artistic background.
What would you say is your biggest challenge with your music career?
For me, one of the biggest challenges is overcoming my shyness and promoting my music authentically. Self-promotion and seeking collaborations can be daunting, but I am actively working on these aspects to improve. Another challenge is staying true to my creativity while assimilating the knowledge gained at Berklee. I want to avoid conforming to industry conventions and preserve what makes me unique as an artist. What are your immediate music goals?
Currently, I am focused on collaborating with other artists and composing music for cinematic projects. I aim to continue developing these collaborations and exploring new opportunities in the music industry. My long-term goal is to release an album and continue creating music that resonates with people and tells stories that deeply touch them.
