“Not The Way You Want It" by Victoria Barral (November 25, 2022 Release)

Victoria Barral is coming back with an epic and experimental song. Victoria never ceases to surprise us with her ability to write and produce versatile music. With R&B and electronic vibes, her 3rd single off her upcoming album, “Not The Way You Want It” embodies deep and vulnerable moments of anxiety and universal themes that many people can resonate with. Victoria opened up to us about her anxiety and struggles with depression. The artist says: “It’s been a really tough year and I’ve gone through some really hurtful experiences that caused me to be anxious and be fearful of the future. I really had to take some time to write about what I was going through and process a lot that was going on.

During the beginning of this year, I got really committed to posting my production process on TikTok. I would just go for it and put out anything I had. I scoped through different plugins to find the sounds that I was looking for that best represented what I was experiencing. I found the most dope sound to use in production that fits so well with this theme of being anxious and restless.”

Victoria also shared about her process making the music: “The production process was a long one. Since the song and lyrics meant so much to me, I didn’t want to rush it. I spent over 8 months revising it and knew it needed changes, I knew I had most of the production down, but definitely needed someone to hop on co-production. Really recently, a phenomenal artist and DJ, Hagen from the Netherlands who had previously remixed a Christian parody I made of Unholy, was down to add production on it. I just sent him the demo I had and Hagen went beyond what I expected and contributed to so much of the beats in the song. After that, it was set. I was super happy that it fit my vision.”

“Not The Way You Want It” opens with an amazing fade in with lofi vintage sound recording and light vocals. Victoria’s verse starts with some solid and real songwriting:

It’s been a long night

A long fight with thoughts in my mind

That don’t even play out in real life

Been running in circles trying to find purpose

I know that’s not the way You Want It.

Victoria’s songwriting addresses something that her audience can relate to: We are all stressed about the future at one point or another and think we need to make expectations for ourselves to be satisfied or successful in life. Victoria shares: “We all get anxious, but living in fear and anxiety is not what God wants for our lives.It is easier said than done, but we need to trust Him more that He has it all planned.”

Later on in the Chorus it says:

“I’m exhausted, I’ve lost it.

Without You I don’t know who I am

And my heart has been hardened.

Without You I am Nothing

Victoria is not hesitant about her relationship with God. She explains that doing things in your own strength doesn’t work and without Jesus, we are nothing. Victoria continues to spread light and truth through her music hoping her music can be her ministry and way to tell people about Jesus.

“Answers" by Victoria Barral (April 22, 2022 Release)

"Answers" is the latest single from the talented singer Victoria Barral! 

You're going to want to listen to this song as soon as you can! What can you expect from the song? Luckily, Victoria was willing to answer a few questions about it for us.

What was the inspiration behind “Answers”?

Many people in the world are searching for answers, and especially these past few years. Waiting for answers for your life can be excruciating at times. “Answers” is a work that expresses the frustration of uncertainty but also sheds light by saying that things will get better. Life will get better, because God has our lives under control.

Inspiration for “Answers” came in 2020, when I came across Psalms 4 in my quiet time with God. It says: “Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!”

I got inspiration off of the Psalm and wrote lyrics in God’s perspective. The lyrics of the chorus came to me quickly - “I see you in your deep distress. I see your heart when there’s nothing left… I know you’re scared hurting for answers, it’s no fair but life will get better. I know you’re scared waiting for answers. Trust that I care more than ever…” This was so reassuring to write something in God’s perspective because it was almost like a response to the call of the Psalm. Writing “Answers” was a blast. 

What was the experience of putting the recording together like?

The recording process for “Answers” was a slow one, I really took my time with this. Probably more time than any other song I’ve worked on. From October 2020-April 2020, I produced “Answers” in my little bedroom studio and worked on multiple versions until it was the final product. The writing process instrumental wise went smoothly. I produced most of the instrumental I including the synths, piano, sub bass, drums, and I took a few loops of guitar my dad recorded on voice memos and sampled it, and ended up reversing the audio. My classmate Amirah Gharbi produced some of the drums and a little bit of vocals. 

The most challenging part of the recording process was recording all the layers of harmonies. Recording vocals required a lot of hard work and time. Vocal performance and emotion in the music was my priority in terms of tracking at home, so it took months to get it right. I ended up video recording the takes and the process of recording.  It was around April of 2021 that I felt I had good takes to send over to my friend and mixer Connor Wang. Connor did a beautiful job mixing. After the mixing process was done my friend Josh Sebek mastered the song and the rest is history. I’m very proud of this work and thankful for it to be out. 

Do you have any goals for the song?

I just hope that this song gives hope to people who are hurting and searching for the right answers for their life. Most importantly, I hope this work is moved by the power of the Holy Spirit! I pray that it will reach both an audience of people of faith and people who aren’t of faith

“Settle" by Victoria Barral (July 16, 2021 Release)

What was the inspiration behind “Settle”?

The inspiration for ‘Settle’ came from life experience and my personal beliefs as a christian. I can’t stress it enough- do not settle for just anyone. Wait for the person God has for you. I have been single my whole life, and while sometimes I feel left out, I know in the future, I will be glad I waited. For years, I’ve seen my friends or people I didn’t know very well settle in relationships, and I kept quiet. I’ve seen so many people get their heart broken and waste their time with people that didn’t even love them. I’ve seen people try to get out of toxic relationships, but would try to numb the pain. So one day I decided to put my feelings into music. I started to sing some words that popped into my head. Then I got the chorus to the song in less than 5 minutes: “Why do people settle just to fill a void, it’s sad that people settle for the wrong people.” I sent this to my co-writer Audrey Bussanich and she absolutely loved this concept and resonated with it.

When we started to write the song, we took this idea and decided to write in third person. We pictured these different songwriting ideas like movie scenes. We created this character- a young woman who gets home late one night, goes to her room and sees her boyfriend is asleep. In the beginning of the song, she is having trouble sleeping that night and she’s staring at the ceiling. Throughout the song, she starts to have this realization like, “why am I doing this to myself. Why am I in this relationship that I know is wrong for me.” Throughout the whole song she is having these thoughts and remembering what her mom told her- “You’re walking down the aisle for something more than happiness.” These are some lyrics in the 2nd Verse that we came up with. The rest of the writing session went so smoothly and the message we wanted to get across is hopefully clear. Audrey and I think a lot of people can relate to this concept, and we hope that we’re spreading light and a good message to young women specifically. As an artist, I hope this song will touch people and maybe open their eyes to something they never have thought out before. 

What was the experience of putting the recording together like?

The experience of putting the record together was so much

fun, but also time consuming and challenging later in the process working virtually. We started writing the song in September of last year and started to record a rough demo. We kind of went for an alternative pop/ folk vibe and spent a few months getting everything together. Initially, Audrey and I did a home recording with her on acoustic guitar and me on piano and vocals. We sketched out an arrangement for bass and drums, but originally they were recording digitally. Months after that, we decided we weren’t satisfied with our version, so I decided to have this professionally recorded in the studio in Boston. Months later, I reached out to Connor Wang, the head of the Audio Engineering Society at Berklee who had an amazing vision for production and mixing and he loved the demo. He was so helpful with the recording process and helped me find session recording musicians. Everything went so well, and the musicians did an amazing job matching up to the original arrangement. The session players on this track include: Adam Saah on drums, Eli Schildkraut on piano, Diego Cortez on guitar, and Kari Estes is on bass.

I sent the best vocals I could to Connor, and the final mix was beyond what I expected. By the end of May, the final step of mastering came and Josh Sebek did an amazing job balancing out the dynamics in the master! The rest is history! This project was by far the biggest collaboration I’ve done it’s really taught me to be teachable, professional, and hard-working. I could be happier with the recording process.

Do you have any goals for the song?

I just hope this song speaks to people. As an artist it’s important to write music that has meaning and value. Above all, I hope anything I do as a musician glorifies God. I understand it’s important for the song to do well in streaming, but it’s all in God’s hands. I’m just here to sing and write what comes from the heart and follow my dreams as a songwriter and recording artist.

"Three Years Ago" is the latest single from blossoming singing sensation Victoria Barral! 

Victoria visited us about a couple of months ago, and we instantly took an interest in her music and style! What can you expect from this song? Here's the blurb:

Victoria's new single, "Three Years Ago" is an emotional ballad about unreciprocated love and the heartbreak of it! Victoria wrote her new single 6 months ago, and knew it was going to be one of her strongest songs the moment she started playing the first few bars of the intro. Victoria thinks that a lot of people can relate to the song because everybody deals with rejection at one point or another. 

This beautiful piece of music includes airy, beautiful vocals and background vocals with gorgeous string parts and a powerful piano sound! You won’t regret listening to this song! 

Her producer Annie Dickinson worked so hard on this project. She tracked piano, vocals, background vocals, whisper, and piano! She also recorded all string parts by herself, making amazing harmonies that fit the vision for the song!

Victoria Barral Visits Section 36!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Victoria Barral is a talented singer, and I was excited she was willing to visit with us and discuss her musical releases and more. I’m sure you’ll love what she has to say.

So, let's see what happens when Victoria Barral visits Section 36!

What do you consider your musical style or genre?

I consider my style to be a mixture of pop& R&B, but I also love to explore different genres! Usually people would say my singles are wholesome, but I would not consider myself a “Christian artist.”

I love your original song, “A Moment”. What can you tell me about it?

My new original song, A Moment is about reconnecting with God after going through some tough situations. Sometimes it’s hard to hear God’s voice and have that “moment” where you feel close to Him. But at the end of the day, everything works out and I realize I worry for nothing. 

Who/what do you consider your biggest musical influence?

One of my biggest influences would probably be Dermot Kennedy, who is originally from Ireland but considers himself to be pop/folk. His songwriting is just so rich and detailed. He really paints a picture with each and every one of his songs, and just one of the most amazing singer/songwriters. He became well know in Boston.  

You’re currently studying at Berklee College of Music. What is the most important thing to come out of that experience?

Going to Berklee College of Music is a blessing. I got so much out of the core music courses such as Harmony and Ear Training. I feel like I developed a better ear for music. I can really use that material to compose more creative music. 

Your social media feeds are full of wonderful informal videos of you singing anything from covers to original songs. What do you enjoy most about putting those together?

Thank you for supporting my social media feed! I really enjoy showing people what I’m working from a classical background but also songwriting background in a practice room setting. It’s very honest and just shows people how I sound without any microphones or any special equipment. It just really shows who I am as an artist.

Right now, what would you say is your biggest career challenge?
Right now, my biggest career challenge is making my family realize that music is a career! I want people to know it’s a God- given passion and it’s what I was created to do, and for a living. There’s so much you can do with music. and it’s not a waste of time. Also, being a young woman trying to put herself out there, is really hard to get exposure for my songs. It’s really hard to stand out, with the industry being highly competitive today. 

What are your immediate career goals?

My career goals right now, are to finish my Spring EP (which consist of 5 songs).  But also write more and more each day. I love to continuing  learning from so many people at Berklee that have decades more of experience than me, and most important, show don’t tell through my music!
