Chella Visits Section 36 Music!

Section 36 Music has another visitor! Chella is an incredible singer whose single "Pro Tempo Parar" is simply outstanding. I was so excited she was willing to visit with us and discuss her music, future goals, and more. I’m sure you’ll love everything she has to say. In addition, because of her large Portuguese speaking fanbase, she was nice enough to answer the questions in both English and Portuguese for us.

I absolutely loved your debut album, “Pro Tempo Parar”. What can you tell me about it?

Thank you so much, Ron! "Pro Tempo Parar" is a concept album which explores all phases of a past relationship of mine, from start to end: honeymoon, doubt and denial, disillusionment, relapse, healing, and acceptance. It's a pretty intense record, for obvious reasons — the most important of them being the fact that I wrote all the songs 100% on my own, as I was processing and coming to terms with these very complex feelings. In the end, the relationship represented in the album is just really a metaphor for the passage of people through our lives. 

The album was recorded and produced by the amazing Moogie Canazio in studio 2 at the EastWest Studios in LA, with my dream team of top-notch musicians: Tim Pierce, Sean Hurley, Jake Reed, Santiago Galeano (also a Berklee alumnus), Felipe Melanio, and Jamie Muhoberac. I aimed for a fresh and organic sound by mixing my 3 main musical influences: MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), pop, and rock. The songs not only develop and speak to each other lyrically, but also musically through the use of melodic and harmonic motifs throughout the record. 

I also believe that the visual aspect of this project was essential to the unfolding of the narrative, by expanding on the meaning and interpretation of each song.

Muito obrigada, Ron! "Pro Tempo Parar" é um álbum conceitual que explora as fases de um relacionamento que eu tive, do início ao fim: a paixão, a dúvida, a desilusão, a recaída, a cura e a aceitação. É um disco bastante intenso, por razões óbvias — a mais importante delas é o fato de que eu escrevi todas as músicas 100% sozinha, enquanto assimilava esses sentimentos complexos. No final das contas, o relacionamento representado no álbum é apenas uma metáfora da passagem das pessoas pela nossa vida.

O álbum foi gravado e produzido pelo incrível Moogie Canazio no estúdio 2 do EastWest Studios em Los Angeles, com meu time de músicos dos sonhos: Tim Pierce, Sean Hurley, Jake Reed, Santiago Galeano (também ex-aluno da Berklee), Felipe Melanio e Jamie Muhoberac. Busquei um som fresco e orgânico misturando minhas 3 principais influências musicais: MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), pop e rock. As músicas não apenas se desenvolvem e se comunicam pelas letras, mas também musicalmente através do uso de motivos melódicos e harmônicos ao longo do disco.

Acredito também que o aspecto visual deste projeto foi essencial para o desenrolar da narrativa, ampliando o significado e a interpretação de cada música.

I really enjoy your “Piano Sessions” videos on your YouTube channel. What is your favorite part about those videos?

Really glad you enjoyed it! I wanted to record the rawest, unedited versions of the songs to my fans, to bring them as close to me and to the compositions as possible. That's literally how the songs were conceived — me and the keys. I am at my happiest and most comfortable when I sit at the piano, and play without thinking or worrying too much, and I want people to see that version of me too. There's a power to stripping down the production. You get to dim the lights and really place the spotlight on the building blocks of the song: lyrics and melody. I guess that's my favorite part; having people truly focus on the message.

Também adorei a sua série de vídeos “Piano Sessions” no seu canal no YouTube. Qual é a sua parte favorita desses vídeos?

Fico muito feliz que você gostou! O meu intuito era gravar a versão mais crua de cada música para meus fãs, para trazê-los o mais próximo possível de mim e das canções. Foi literalmente assim que as músicas foram concebidas — eu e as teclas. A minha versão mais feliz e confortável é quando sento ao piano e toco sem pensar ou me preocupar muito, e quero que as pessoas conheçam esse meu lado. Existe um poder em reduzir a produção. Você consegue colocar os holofotes nos elementos vitais da música: a letra e a melodia. Acho que essa é minha parte favorita; fazer com que as pessoas realmente se concentrem na mensagem.

You graduated from Berklee College of Music. How did Berklee help your career?

I lived the best years of my life at Berklee! I was exposed to so many musical and cultural possibilities... Berklee helped shape me as an artist, as it was the perfect opportunity to experiment and embrace all ideas — the good and the bad —, and dip my toes into every genre and style. I mean, what if my song sucked? If my performance sucked? My audience didn't exist just yet. No one (except for my friends and colleagues) was listening — so why not dare to experiment? Failure only got me closer to the artist I want to become. It helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, what I liked and what I disliked. It narrowed me down to my core. 

Berklee also gave me all the tools necessary to be a well-rounded songwriter and music business professional. I feel ready and excited for any challenges my career may bring, and I owe a lot of this confidence to my Berklee education. 

Você se formou na Berklee College of Music. Como a Berklee ajudou na sua carreira?

Vivi os melhores anos da minha vida na Berklee! Fui exposta a tantas possibilidades musicais e culturais... a Berklee ajudou a me moldar como artista, pois foi a oportunidade perfeita para experimentar e abraçar todas as ideias — as boas e as ruins — e mergulhar em todos os gêneros e estilos. Tipo, e se eu escrevesse uma música ruim? E se a minha performance fosse ruim? Meu público ainda não existia. Ninguém (exceto meus amigos e colegas de faculdade) estava ouvindo — então por que não ousar experimentar? O fracasso só me aproximou da artista que eu queria me tornar. Me ajudou a entender meus pontos fortes e fracos, o que eu gostava e o que não gostava. Isso me reduziu ao meu âmago.

A Berklee também me deu todas as ferramentas necessárias para ser uma compositora completa e uma profissional da indústria musical. Me sinto pronta e animada para quaisquer desafios que minha carreira possa trazer, e devo muito dessa confiança à minha formação na Berklee.

Who or what would you consider your biggest musical influences?

Definitely the teachers I've had over the years — because I admire them so much, I learn and reproduce everything I can from them, and eventually, make it sound my own. Debora Gurgel, Tatiana Parra, Rodney Alejandro, John Debo... just to name a few!

The artists which most influenced my work include Coldplay, Conan Gray, Lizzy McAlpine, Taylor Swift, Tiago Iorc, Tribalistas, among many others! 

Quais são as suas maiores influências musicais?

Definitivamente, os professores que tive ao longo dos anos — porque os admiro muito, aprendo e reproduzo tudo o que posso com eles e, eventualmente, trago todos esses aprendizados pro mundinho Chella. Débora Gurgel, Tatiana Parra, Rodney Alejandro, John Debo... só para citar alguns!

Além dos meus professores, os artistas que mais influenciaram o meu trabalho incluem Coldplay, Conan Gray, Lizzy McAlpine, Taylor Swift, Tiago Iorc, Tribalistas, entre muitos outros!

What would you say is your biggest challenge with your music career?

Most definitely content creation. I believe that being online so much is truly damaging to the artist, and it is something I personally struggle with. I am still trying to find that healthy sweet spot between spending time working on socials, and spending time offline working on my music and not getting distracted. It's so easy to get sucked into the endless feed tab and forget why you opened the app in the first place — to post something or to reply to comments or to send a dm. I guess it's hard when social media is part of your job because the platforms are work and entertainment simultaneously. 

Qual é o maior desafio na sua carreira musical?

Definitivamente, a criação de conteúdo. Acredito que passar tanto tempo online é realmente prejudicial para o artista, e é algo que ainda é muito difícil para mim. Ainda estou tentando encontrar aquele equilíbrio saudável entre passar tempo trabalhando nas redes sociais e passar tempo offline trabalhando na minha música, sem distrações. É tão fácil ser sugada pela aba infindável do feed e esquecer por que você abriu o aplicativo em primeiro lugar — para postar algo, responder a comentários ou enviar um DM. Acho que é difícil quando as redes sociais fazem parte do seu trabalho, porque as plataformas acabam sendo trabalho e entretenimento ao mesmo tempo.

What are your immediate music goals?

I am currently working on new music... so I am obviously super excited about that! However, my goals also involve writing more for other artists and starting to play live shows featuring my original music. Oh, meeting more of my fans in person too. This is the coolest and most gratifying thing on earth. 

Quais são os objetivos na música a curto prazo?

Atualmente estou trabalhando em novas músicas... então estou obviamente super animada com isso! No entanto, meus objetivos também envolvem escrever mais para outros artistas e começar a fazer shows ao vivo com minhas músicas autorais. Ah, conhecer mais fãs pessoalmente também. Esta é a coisa mais legal e gratificante do mundo!
